In a move that has been anticipated for the last two months, German winger Julian Brandt has extended his contract with Leverkusen. Brandt, who is a cornerstone to the Die Werkself franchise, will be able to further develop his game, while helping Leverkusen try to secure a standing where they are a annual contender for a European league slot.
Brandt is considered one of the top young wings in Germany and is at least in the discussion for a spot on the Die Mannschaft World Cup roster this summer. His extension with Leverkusen give the club some commitment that it will have one of the top, young German talent on its roster until 2021.
Brandt has scored six goals in the league and provided four assists this season, grabbing a total of 24 goals in 126 Bundesliga matches since joining Leverkusen midway through the 2013-14 campaign. Brandt joined Leverkusen at the age of 17 and became the second-youngest player to ever score a Bundesliga goal for Leverkusen.
Our take: This was a necessary and vital move for Die Werkself. Brandt is a prodigious talent with the ability to score and create offense for others. His inclusion in the Leverkusen line-up for at least three more years is huge benefit to the club. We would love to Brandt be more assertive on the pitch and start to embrace more of a leadership role within the team. He is right on the cusp of earning a World Cup roster spot and can help himself mightily over the next six weeks with a more confident approach to his game.
