Bundesliga Match Day 30: Weekend Wrap-Up

Well, Eintracht Frankfurt did not handle the Niko Kovac news well.

The Eagles got hammered 4-1 by a motivated and dangerous Bayer Leverkusen side that is primed to make a strong challenge at Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday.

It is tough to blame Frankfurt for its lackluster play as it was surely unmotivated after learning Kovac was bolting after the season. In all honesty, playing Leverkusen was one of the worst possible matchups that the Eagles could have had.

Behind a hat trick from Kevin Volland and another goal from Julian Brandt, Die Werkself just manhandled Frankfurt. Leverkusen's recent play should be commended and they should give Bayern Munich all it can handle. The raw talent and ability of Volland, Brandt, Leon Bailey, and Kai Havertz among others is going create havoc in the Bundesliga for years to come.

For Frankfurt, the Kovac move was unfortunate for both its club and the league. Whatever Kovac was doing with Frankfurt was clearly working, but we aren't sure many other coaches could coax out of that team exactly what Kovac was getting. Mexico's Marco Fabian had the Frankfurt goal, but Die Adler has surely lost some wind beneath its wings. Now in 7th place, a European league spot that once looked so promising is now in major doubt.

FC Augsburg 0, Wolfsburg 0: Double goose eggs for these two squads. The Wolves needed a win, but are likely more than happy to escape with a draw. Augsburg, meanwhile, failed to capitalize on an opportunity to capture three points. Each team was booked for a red card, so there is that....but not much else.

Werder Bremen 1, RB Leipzig 1: We expected Bremen to play Leipzig tough and to really challenge them, but we didn't foresee Leipzig letting down so easily. A tie is NOT a good result for Leipzig here. With a top-six spot no sure thing, Leipzig failed miserably on a good opportunity to garner three points. Now, Leipzig sits in fifth place, but could easily fall out of the coveted European league spots that it so desperately covets. There is no easier way to lose young, hungry players than to be also-ran before you have become a has-been. Leipzig needs to be better than relying on Ademola Lookman to provide all its offense. Bremen, meanwhile, did exactly what it has been doing over the past six weeks and that is making life hell for anyone it plays. Finland's Nikolas Moisander supplied the goal for Bremen, which has now created some distance between itself and the RELEGATION DANGER ZONE.

Schake 04 2, Borussia Dortmund 0: Speaking of teams that make life hell for their opposition, Schalke dismantled a hapless and lifeless Dortmund side, which speaks volumes about the state of BVB. In its pathetic display, Dortmund lost Michy Batshuayi for the season due to an injury and also thoroughly embarrassed itself with a lack of effort. Schalke took Dortmund's heart with goals from Evgen Konoplyanka and Naldo to keep its own train rollicking along. It's hard to take anything away from Schalke dominating its rival in the Revierderby, but Dortmund's lethargy cannot be ignored, despite a strong and dominating effort by the Royal Blues.

Bayern Munich 5, Borussia Monchengladbach 1: After allowing an early goal to Josip Drmic and the Foals, Die Roten kicked it into gear and smashed M'Gladbach. Sandro Wagner did his best Robert Lewandowski impression for two goals, while Thiago Alcantara, David Alaba, and Lewandowski himself all found the back of the net. It was another dominant Bundesliga performance for the reigning champions.

Hertha Berlin 2, FC Koln 1: Koln's attempt to get out of the Bundesliga basement looks like it officially has taken water. The Billy Goats are firmly in the RELEGATION DANGER ZONE and will likely finish in dead last. Hertha used two goals from Davie Selke to race past Koln, who received a tally from Leonardo Bittencourt.

Hoffenheim 2, Hamburger SV 0: Hoffenheim received goals from Serge Gnabry and Adam Szalai to race away from Der Dinosaur. Hoffenheim is sitting pretty in the sixth place position with a chance to advance further up the standings, while Eintracht Frankfurt appears to be unraveling.

Hannover 96 1, Vfb Stuttgart 1: Hannover gonna Hannover. They muck it up and grind everyone down. Niclas Fullkrug's 91st minute goal equalize an earlier score by Stuttgart's Erik Thommy. Hannover's season really should be applauded. They have far exceed all expectations. Kudos to them!

Mainz 2, SC Freiburg 0: Mainz dispatched Freiburg to push itself ahead of Freiburg and out of the RELEGATION DANGER ZONE. The loss for Freiburg has capped off a wretched stretch of seven games without a win.

This week's (ghastly) record: 3-6

This season's pathetic record: 44-46

Note: Predicted ties count as a win if correct and as a loss if there is a winner; conversely if a game is predicted to have a winner but ends in a tie, it will count as a loss
