Josh Sargent extends deal with Werder Bremen

USMNT striker Josh Sargent has extended his contract with Werder Bremen, which will keep him in Germany for the immediate future. The new contract will apply retrospectively from the start of this year. Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is clear that both the player and club are happy with how things have progressed.

“We’re very pleased with Josh’s development. His future belongs at Werder, so we’re glad that we’ll accompany him on his journey in the coming years,” said Frank Baumann, managing director.

Sargent has made quite an impression on his coach.

“If you see Josh in the dressing room, in training or on a matchday, you see someone who wants to watch and learn, not just a very talented young footballer," said Werder Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt. "I’m sure that Josh will become a very important part of the squad.”

As for Sargent, the Missouri-native is looking forward to establishing himself as a professional in the Bundesliga.

“I’m feeling very honored," Sargent said. "The contract extension also shows the club’s trust in me. I’ve felt at home from day one at Werder and in Bremen and I’m looking forward to the coming years."

ESPN's Taylor Twellman is reporting that the extension is a "long term multi-million $$$ deal."

Whatever the case, Sargent will be in a terrific spot to develop his game as he hopes to be a key cog for the United States in its quest to capture a spot in the 2022 World Cup.
